Global Alliance of Networks of MPA Managers and Conservation Trust Funds

September 5th

Session Description

Conservation Trust Funds (CTFs), CTF networks, and networks of MPA managers are joining forces to create a new "Global Alliance for Marine Protection.” This new global community will act to support effectively managed and sustainably financed Marine Protected Areas (MPA) and seeks to assure the Post 2020 MPA targets are fully implemented on the ground. This session will introduce the Global Alliance for Marine Protection.

Background:
Conservation Trust Funds (Costa Rica por Siempre, MedFund, MAR Fund…) are key partners supporting MPAs’ operation and recurrent costs with a long-term perspective by providing key financial resources to MPAs and supporting financial innovation. Networks of Conservation Trust Funds (such as RedLAC or Café) help to build learning communities that shares best practices and pursues innovative finance mechanisms in order to foster conservation, environmental management and sustainable development.

Networks of MPA managers (MedPAN, CaMPAM, NAMPAN, RAMPAO…) are key to support effective management of MPAs by building communities of site-based actors. They build communities of MPA managers facing similar challenges. Networks enable the generation of creativity, problem solving, capacity building and resource sharing among MPAs. Networks also enable the creation of needed linkages between MPA actions on the ground and decision-making processes. Since 2017, a Common Strategy for Cooperation in the Atlantic region, allowed MPA networks of managers to act together and are now building strength under the EU Ocean Governance project.

The new Global Alliance will enable to unite networks of MPA managers and Conservation Trust Funds to achieve global impact and promote the achievement of the post 2020 goals by supporting MPAs through improved effectiveness, blue economy innovations and financial sustainability. Acting collectively is needed more than ever to face ocean challenges.

Unfortunately no recording will be made available for this session.
